Ru Ji Kitchen and Blanco Court Kway Chap at Old Airport Road Food Centre

We are back at Old Airport Road Food Centre, to,... of cource try more food. Like I said previously, there is lots of good food here and I am going to try to cover as much as I can here. Hopefully you will join me for my food adventures

How to get there :-
Address

51 Old Airport Road, Singapore 390051
Nearest landmark
This Food Centre is between Mountbatten MRT Station and Dakota MRT Station. Last time I gave directions from Mountbatten MRT station. But Dakota MRT Station is slightly closer, so I will give you directions from Dakota MRT Station.
After you get out of the gantry at Dakota MRT station, you turn left and head towards Exit A. Take the escalator up until the top, the turn right towards the main road. Then at the main road, turn right again and keep walking until you see the traffic light. Cross the street at the traffic light and continue walking. You will walk pass a bus stop and an overhead bridge. Keep walking until you reach the next traffic light. At the traffic light, you will be able to see the Old Airport Road Food Centre. Cross the road at the traffic light and you will reach the food centre.

The first dish we are eating today, which is good for breakfast, and is a common breakfast food, is Chee Cheong Fun. This is a rice roll stuffed with ingredients.

Address
Old Airport Road FC #01-155
Timing
8am - 10pm

How to Order :-
1) Go to the counter and decide what you want to order, the menu is on the signage.
2) Decide if you want porridge, noodles, rice rolls or dumplings
3) Decide which ingredient you want with your rice roll
Chicken, Mushroom, BBQ pork, Prawn, Turnip, Egg, Pig Liver                        $2 each
Century Egg, Otah, Scallop                                                                                  $3 each
4) Place order and watch them make it freshly for you.
5) Once it is done, make payment and find a seat to enjoy your dish
This is the dish that was freshly made. I ordered rice roll with BBQ pork and Prawn. Basically, they put a mixture of water and rice flour on a piece of cloth, then put the ingredients on top. Then close the steamer and wait a while. They then open the steamer and scoop out the rice sheet with the ingredients on top. They then proceed to fold the rice sheet over the ingredients, to make a roll. Then then plate it and add the sweet soy sauce.

The sauce was quite pleasant. It is a sweet soy sauce that goes well with the chee cheong fun. The rice roll was soft and smooth. Almost no effort was needed to chew it. The BBQ pork was in thin strips in the rice roll and adds a slightly meaty and sweet taste to the rice roll. The Prawns in the prawn rice roll was fresh. They added the chili sauce. It is like a chili oil with some deep fried ingredients in it that helps to add abit of texture to the rice roll. It also goes well with the prawn rice roll.

Overall, a good start to the day. This dish was freshly made and was very enjoyable. Rating 3.5/6 Better than tasty

The original shop is still operating at the Holland View Food Centre. The standard at this shop is mostly, most of the time, almost as good as the original shop. But I think the original shop, they give abit more of the sambal.

How to Order :-
1) Go to the stall, if there is a queue, go to the end of the line
2) Once you get to the front of the line, place your order
3) Decide on the type of noodles      kway teow (Flat rice noodles), mee pok (flat egg noodles) Mee Kia ( Thin egg noodles)
4) Decide if you want dry or soup
5) Decide on size / price        $3  /  $4  /  $5
6) Once your dish is prepared, make payment
7) Find a seat and enjoy your food

I ordered the $3, dry, mee pok (flat egg noodles). The star of this dish is the sambal chili that they put into their dry noodles. The sambal chili is very flavourful and is slightly spicy. There is also pork lard in the noodles. But once you mix it all together. It is very good.
The sambal chili is the star of the dish. You can smell the dried prawn paste. And the deep fried pork lard is nice and crispy. The soup is also nice and refreshing.

The also make their own fish ball and fish cake. The fish cake has a nice bite texture to it. It is nice and firm. A very satisfying mouth feel to chew. The fishball was quite bouncy, but abit too soft and dissappear too easily when you chew on it...

Overall, I like this mee pok, since it is slightly different from other mee pok. No black vinegar here but a powerful sambal chili to hit a home run. Rating 4/6 Damn Good

This place sells kway chap. Kway chap is flat rice noodles, But what they serve with that kway chap, really blows your mind. It is just all parts of the pork, all delicious and all so good. This shop originally, used to be from Blanco Court Food Centre 3rd floor.

5) Wait for them to prepare your dish
6) Once it is done, take it to a seat and enjoy
This stall, makes once of the better braised pork innards. In the dish, you have pork belly, intestine, stomach and toufu. The braising sauce, which is savoury and full of all the meaty taste, and slightly herbal and by itself is very salty. But the braising sauce penetrates thru all the meat and intestine and stomach and if you eat it together, it is just right and super yummy.

Once I started eating, I could not stop. It was very addictive and before I realise it, I had mostly finish everything. The chili sauce helps to neutralise some of the saltiness of the meat. It is spicy and super sour but goes well with all the pork meat and innards. Meat also leaves a nice porky after taste.
The kway chap was soft and smooth but firm enough that it does not break while you try to spoon it up. It  goes well with deep fried shallots. It is thin and they put some of the braising sauce into the kway chap soup. This makes it so flavourful that you can almost eat it all on it's own. Rating 5/6 Execellent

Lastly, some desert before we call it a day. Today, our desert is coming from Lao Ban Soya Beancurd and we are having Soya Beancurd Desert.

Address
Old Airport Road FC #01-127
Timing
Tue - Sat 11.30am-8pm, Sun 1pm - 8pm

How to Order :-
1) Go to the stall and place your order
2) Decide on either the drink or desert
3) Decide on the flavour of the desert    plain / almond  / there will be various other flavours in the fridge.
4) Make payment the find a seat and enoy.

When they first open their stall, it was during the Soya beancurd desert craze, afew years before and there were long queue, for their desert. Even at the old airport road FC, there were 4 such stalls selling soya beancurd desert. But now that the craze has died down, I think there is only this and another stall left selling this desert

What I like is that there is a nice vanila after taste you get after each bite. But the texture is not as smooth as I would like and it is actually abit jelly-ish. When they first started, if I am not mistaken, it used to be much smoother and abit thicker (ie. they used more soya beans). But now adays, I think their quality has dropped. Rating 2/6 Average

I hoped you enjoyed our trip here for the food. Old Airport Road Food Centre really does have many good foods to eat. So please come and explore. You will not regret it.
